Birth Professional: Business and Copyright Basics
In this program, attorney Laura Possessky will discuss basic legal considerations for setting up and maintaining your business.  Different business structures mean different outcomes for your practice; whether you are a sole proprietor or a corporate business will affect how much liability you may absorb personally and how you will be taxed on your income.  Being savvy in your business affairs is as important as are your skills as a professional.  The program will also highlight Intellectual Property considerations for your practice, focusing on how copyright laws affect the ability to use the materials of others in your presentations, for client care and on your website.

Understand Your Contract!
The contract for your services should reflect the relationship between you and your client.  But do you know what your contract says?  Laura Possessky will discuss some basic issues of contract law and discuss key terms for the central agreement that sets the tone for you and your clients.   The focus of this session will be on contracts for midwifery and doula services; key provisions will be reviewed and a template will be provided that you can adapt with your own legal counsel.
