Gentle Birth: The Science and the Wisdom
Sarah J Buckley, MD, family physician, mother of four and author of the internationally-acclaimed book Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering will present Gentle Birth: The Science and the Wisdom, a series of lectures on the natural processes of birth, and the impact of interventions in pregnancy and birth on mothers and babies.
These ground-breaking lectures, based on Sarah’s public talks and conference presentations in the US, Australia and New Zealand, will be educational and informative for midwives, nurses, childbirth educators, doulas, natural health practitioners and others. This series will also be valuable for parents who want to be fully informed about their choices in pregnancy and birth.
Presentations will include:
- Ultrasound safety and other considerations. In this workshop, Dr. Buckley will discuss important questions about the safety of prenatal ultrasound based on scientific research, and will suggest ways to maximize the benefits and minimize the harms from ultrasound.
- The safety and logic of normal birth. This workshop will explore how the delicate and complex hormonal processes of labor provide safety, ease and pleasure, as well as long-term benefits, for mother and baby.
- Afterbirth: cord clamping and other third stage issues. Featuring the normal processes that happen immediately after birth (third stage) for mother and baby, this workshop will examine the impact of interventions such as cord clamping and Pitocin injections, and offer suggestions for optimizing this time for mother and baby.
- When birth goes wrong: the hormonal impact of interventions for mother and baby. Referencing the latest scientific research, this workshop will focus on how common birth practices can make birth more difficult and dangerous for mother and baby. The discussion will also include recommendations for enhancing safety and ease in birth.
- Epidurals: impact on mother and baby. Dr. Buckley will present important evidence-based information for women and care providers about the effects of epidurals in labor and on the newborn.
- Thinking twice about cesarean surgery. This workshop will reveal the latest medical evidence about the risks, benefits and side effects of cesareans, including little-known research on the altered physiology (body processes) of cesarean newborns.
NOTE: You may enroll in the entire series or in individual workshops. Workshop 2 is a prerequisite for workshop 4.
