We are pleased to announce the newest addition to our family,

Born into his father’s loving hands on December 22, 2008 at 10:17 p.m.

Weight: 7 pounds
Length: 19 inches
Head Circ: 14 inches

Big sisters Amelia and Sofie are thrilled with their little brother, and mom is thriving as all (new) mothers should.

Gabriel Asher will be the first male child in our longstanding Jewish family tradition to remain intact.

A special thanks to Gloria Lemay for her phenomenal care during the labor, delivery and postpartum, and to our local backup midwife Kristine Lauria for her support and encouragement while Gloria was on her way to Colorado.

Happy (Belated) Holidays
Happy New Year!

  1. While I did send you a “congrats” on Gabriel’s birth, I am just now reading this and your more recent blog entry on the circumcision decision. Your choosing to leave Gabriel intact is no surprise to me 😉 but I was struck by your mention that he is the first male in your family to remain intact. What struck me is that it had never occurred to me to think of my eldest son that way. A first.

My eldest – the first of what would be three intact sons – WAS the first Jewish male in my family not to be circumcised. His non-Jewish father WAS circumcised and is furious about it. He felt as strongly as I did that it would not happen to his sons.

What makes me particularly happy is that our talking about the importance of leaving our sons intact caused my younger brother to consider the issue in a way he might not have otherwise. I was so thrilled when three years ago, my little brother – whose bris I vividly remember – left his own son intact. So my sons were the first and, by serving as example and inspiration, there may now be no more circumcision in my family.
